Here is a summary of the key items. 1. Meeting of the Ardchomhairle (6/19) Gaeilge Tomas O Maoldomhnaigh will represent Comhaltas on the new Coiste Comhairleach na Gaeilge committee being set up be Minister Eamon O Cuiv to advise on language policies to cover the next 20 years. Athnuchan and the 5 Year Development Programme These programes were discussed - see next section on the Joint Meeting for details. Fleadh Cheoil Aug. 27 - 29, Scoil Eigse Aug. 22 - 27 in Clonmel. Check www.clonmelfleadh.com RTE will again televise 6 programs. Ceili House and Raidio na Gaeltactha will also be in attendance. Fleadh 2005 There will be 3 applications: Ballina, Ballybunion, and Letterkenny. Treoir Next issue will be available by the end of July. American Tour The group will fly out Monday, 9/27/04 and return to Ireland 10/12/04. Ballraiocht It is hoped that a special effort will be made to expand membership in each branch with a view to broadening the interaction with the general public. Areas where new branches could be formed should also be considered. Comhaltas headquarters could cover insurance costs for the first year of a new branch. NASC The cards will again be available with membership packs this year. Considerable finance has been raised by some branches with this scheme. There is no outlay and no risk for the branch which can keep 90% of all monies collected. 'Comhaltas Live' We strongly urge units to encourage registration in this excellent TV program. A liaison person person in each unit to promote Comhaltas Live would be beneficial in making the project more widely known. New technical improvements and a new cost structure are in place. PR Packs It is generally agreed that public relations are an important element of our work. Regional Boards are encouraged to purchase the PR pack for its branches, or work out a cost sharing arrangement. We need to better market Comhaltas using its logos, fonts, and other branding data available in the package. Fleadh Nua Fleadh Nua 2004 was a hugh success with over 70 elements in the programme which stretched over nine days 2. Joint Ardchomhairle and Sub-Committee Meeting (6/19) The purpose of the meeting was to review a 5 year plan entitled: 'Development Programe for the Irish Traditional Arts' that was organized and documented by Maurice Mullen. The Programe is documented in a 40 page book which was received by all the committee members: The books are confidential until the 'official' launch at an appropriate time in the near future. The meeting was addressed by Jim Teevan, President of Comhaltas, Labhras O Murchu, Ardstiurthoir an Chomhaltais, Maurice Mullen, and Jim McAllister. The nine new sub-committees of the Athnuachan programme, which are project oriented, play an essential role in implementing the Development Programme. Important items were outlined by Maurice Mullen in his address at the North American Convention in April and again at this joint meeting. They include the development of new partnerships at all levels, expansion of teaching and branches, continued establishment of regional resource centers, and many other new initiatives which will be made known at the official launch of the Programme. Each sub-committee chairperson gave a presentation of the work they envision for their committee. There are 81 people assigned to these nine committees. The 9 sub-committees and their chairs are: 1. Ceol - Paddy Ryan 2. Gaeilge - Gearoid Mac an Ultaigh 3. Rince - Billy Boylan 4. Education - Kathleen Nesbitt 5. Events - Liam O Cuinneagain 6. Resources - Paddy Duffy 7. Archives - Seamus MacMathuna 8. Public Relations - Martin Gaffney 9. Meitheal - Tomas O Maoldomhnaigh Some memorable statements were made at the meeting: This vision for the traditional arts can be realized not by it acting in isolation, but by working in the community with a variety of partners. The ground up, broad based partnership approach is one of the particular strengths of Comhaltas. We must build on this strength to ensure that success is imbedded in the community for the long term benefit. It was stressed several times to read the program book carefully, then read it again, then read it again. Each time you will find something new. We can do it; we must do it! We must develop an arrogance that we are right. My personal note: This was the best Comhaltas meeting that I've had the honor to attend. It generated much excitement and enthusiasm. This sentiment was shared by several people that I talked to after the meeting. Our North American activities, as documented in our Three Year Plan, seem to dovetail very nicely into the Development Programme. 3. Irish language Initiative (6/18) Glor na Gael has approached Comhaltas to set up a program of initiatives to promote Irish. The initiatives would be structured in a way that goals could be set to measure their implementation progress over the course of a year. Awards would be granted for the highest achievement rate against goals that you set for your project. Glor na Gael would evaluate each program, it's goals, and achievement rate, and select the reciepant. The award ceremony is envisioned to be a prestigious event, with the award possibly presented by the President of Ireland. The programs will be practical in nature, such as: 1. Sinage in Irish that could be used at meetings, sessions, and other community events. 2. Introduce Irish phrases into the workings of meetings and activities. 3. Run classes in Irish 4. Assemble a group of Irish speakers. 5. Bring in people from outside of Comhaltas, such as the GAA, IACI, etc. to work these and other ideas. This is to be an environmental project and not focused on fluent Irish speakers. Labhras pointed out that young people today have a very limited vocabulary of about 200 words, compared to their grand parents of the before TV era. We are being called on to energize the community with Irish words, functional phrases, names of dances, stickers with Irish sayings, etc. Since Glor na Gael does not have a presence in North America, we need to work this program thru our Irish Officers at each level. At this time branches should select programs and set goals, before mentioning the award aspect.
